Hi there.
On the evening of April 26th I realised my throat was a bit scratchy. Then the following day, the 27th, it developed in to a real sore throat. That night I woke up and it was very painful. I looked at it and saw a pus spot. I knew it was another case of strep, which I have had about a dozen times since I was 11 years old.
As I just moved, and was not driving distance to my GP of 17 years, I went to my local Urgent Care clinic. They did a rapid test and confirmed the strep. They gave me 500mg Pen VK, twice a day for 10 days. I went home and took two, to get it going, and by the next morning (only 24 hours later) the spot was gone and the pain was negligible. I continued the meds, but with my hectic, single mom schedule I was taking two here, on there, but at least 3 per day. On the third or fourth day it suddenly began to get worse again. So I called the clinic on the seventh day (after the meds had run out) and they gave me Augmentin. However, three days in to it and it was just getting worse. I called my regular GP and he prescribed Zithromax, which I just began yesterday (2 to start yesterday and one today). Unfortunately, my throat is just getting worse, by the minute, and the pain is almost unbearable. My ears are also beginning to ache and feel "hot" inside.
I am concerned that my random dosing the first time caused a relapse. My fault. However, I remember very well that the last time I got strep it was pretty bad. Also, I suffered an acute infection during the delivery of my son which, after an emergency c-section, took more than four weeks and two different antibiotics to kick.
Am I wasting my time with these meds, and if so, which of the three would you nest recommend as I have full prescriptions of Augmentin and Pen VK ready to do. I will finish the Zpack as prescribed, but how long should I give it to "kick in" before I try something else/in addition?
(sorry it's so long)
Rebecca
