Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Black Bruising On Knee After A Fall

I had a bad fall 6 days ago; landing on my left knee. There was quite a bit of swelling, and then black bruising under the knee cap and swelling above. I applied ice and elevated it for several hours and it appeared to be healing up. It now is very dark again, and swelling and extremely tender to the slightest touch. I wear support knee highs for vein issues, my leg is very red above the stocking and warm to the touch. Should I get the knee x rayed? I know I have little cartilage in that knee. Other than the expected swelling stiffness it moves pretty well.
