Suggest Treatment For Thick Skin Growth Under Acrylic Nails

I am a 50 year old female within normal weight range and in good health. I have worn acrylic nails for years and all of a sudden I have this thick, tender extra skin under my nails. I stopped the acrylics, but will this go away in time? What can I do to get rid of it? What is it, maybe a reaction to the adhesive? Thanks
