Thank You -- My Husband Hurt The Calf On One

Thank you -- my husband hurt the calf on one leg on Friday -- was coming down flight of stairs and must have stepped oddly on it ---- the calf feels hard/tight , not pliable like his other calf -- is this likely a sprain or strain or is it more likely something torn?
And - any remedies other than time?
