Thank You In Advance, My Son Had Back Fusion Surgery

Thank you in advance,
My Son had back fusion surgery in Boston General on Tuesday 1/17/17 and was sent home on Thursday 1/19.
He was given the drug Oxycontin 5 MG 3 tablets every three hours. He has been taking them every three hours for days.
This concerns me, as he now is running short, today being the 21st. I fear a lack of communication between my Son and his Doctor. The problem grows as I am told this by phone, he is living 60 miles from this hospital, and in MA the law is a Dr. can only prescribe for 7 days. The script must be picked up in person.
Why would he be running low on the drug, if it was intended for seven days.
I am elderly and a distance away, I want to help and am over the top concerned. Can you advice?
Thank you,
Jan
