The Vein That Is In My Wrist Running Up To

The vein that is in my wrist running up to the thumb has become very pronounced and the part in the thumb hurts, stings...comes in waves. I was wondering if it could be something serious or just annoying pain...it did get worse after some hard gardening this spring. Any thoughts?
