Today I Went To My Dr Because Of Severe Pain

Today I went to my dr because of severe pain on the outside of my foot above my heel and below the ankle. There is no pain in the joint, no redness and no swelling so doesn't seem to be gout. PA thinks it could be plantar faciitis. Plantar faciitis, I've read, feels like a knife sticking in and it burns and is usually on the bottom of the foot. My pain feels like a severe stone bruise on the side of my foot when I step. Any other ideas?
