What Are Reasons For Sudden Loss Of Hearing?

I am 56 years old and have had hearing problems since I was 46. I had a series of ear infections when younger but doctors tell me those have no relation to my hearing loss. I went to a doctor once who said that it could be connected to Lupus but the blood exam came out negative. What are the other reasons for it? I was never exposed to severe noise.
