What Can Cause Pain In My Left Nipple?

Hi, I have been seen a few times for a left nipple that is retracted some or most of the time. Nothing has been found to be wrong. It started hurting last night and is a little red. No discharge seen. It is painful,not bad, to the toch today. What could cause this please?
