What Can Cause Polyp?

I am 48 yrs old and I had menstral bleeding off and on for a month. Four months ago, my Dr. put me on birth control pills to get my cycle under control. I went back for a check up - a physical and paps smear. A polyp was detected. I was wondering if the pill could have caused the polyp -- maybe from the increase in estrogen?
