What Can Cause Severe Headaches?

I have suffering from severe headaches that wake me up during the night. Even when I take pain killers they dont seem to work. Is there anything that I can try to get relief, I do believe that I have a weekness on my left hand side with the mussels that is causing the headaches on the left hand side of the head.
