What Causes A Crawling Sensation On The Outer Ear?

My outer ear, outside the head, cartilage part, has.............it feels like a caterpillar s feel is crawling around. Just started about a month ago but is persisting. It is annoying. What would cause this feeling? It goes around the ear canal on the outside and makes its way to the outer part of the ear canal.
