What Causes A False Positive Result For Nitrate In The Urine?

My 2 1/2 year has a urine sample taking yesterday. She has a high amount of leukocytes in her urine & some blood (but she had a catheter and her doctor said the blood could be from that) she has no nitrates though. They sent her urine out for a culture. How possible is it for her to still have a UTI with no nitrates showing up in her urine? It s been one day, so I have 2 more days until her culture comes back. Fevers really scare me & I just want answers.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

There is a possibility that the symptoms are related to a urinary tract infection.

I suggest using Tylenol for the fever.

The urine culture will help to confirm the diagnosis and take proper antibiotic to treat the infection.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
