What Causes A Hoarse Throat, Sticky Saliva And Voice Soreness?

i am constantly clearing my throat as I feel there is a coating of sticky saliva there all the time. My voice box is very sore now and i am trying to swallow instead of clear it - last night i couldnt stop swallowing over and over - it is keeping me awake and is very worrying. please help
