What Causes A Large Red Spot On Head?

I developed a spot on my head about 1 1/2 diameter on Saturday after itching for the two days before. It is still there and is reddish in color. I have not hit this spot in any way. I am 66 year old female, should I go to my primary physician or dermatologist? b
