What Causes A Lump At The Back Of Throat?

my throat felt as if something was stuck in it and every time I eat I cough alot... I thought there was food stuck in my throat so i stuck my finger inside it, but I felt a lump instead at the very back of my tongue, not visible if I open my mouth. it's hard and quite large, could it be serious?
