What Causes A Lump On The Back?

I noticed a quarter size brusie on my husbands back 2 days ago. Today it is large as the palm of my hand. I felt it and it has a quarter size lump. He has not injured himself and has many heath issues and is a Vietnam Veteran exposed to Agent Orange. Please advise.
