What Causes A Mass Below The Last Ribcage?

Hello, Approximately 2 years ago I noticed a mass below my last rib on my right side. I went to my university clinic and the doctor ran an CT scan and an MRI. Neither test showed anything. My doctor s best guess is that we re actually feeling my kidney. That seems weird to me. His only idea was to have exploratory surgery but strongly recommended against it. Any ideas?
