What Causes A Painful Blister On The Buttocks?

my husband has a swollen area on his left buttock. It is oval shape and almost purple in color. today there is more swelling and he can't sit down. The swollen area seems to be expanding up the buttock. It doesn't look like a picture of a boil and is soft to the touch. Any idea on how to help the swelling or pain?
