What Causes A Painful Bump Having Dark Skin On The Back?

I have a lump that has formed in the centre of my back about 2cm to the left of the spine. It is quite painful and seemed to start as a large pimple. It now has a central mass about 3 cm across. The skin is dark. I am experiencing lower flank pain that wakes me at night. What is the problem?
