What Causes A Painful Large Reddish Bruise In Groin Area?

My mother has an unexplained bruise near hip (groin area?). Her hip has been hurting for several days. Now she said this bruise is a reddish purple hand size spot that she saw today. Could this be connected to hip pain? When do I worry about having it checked?
