What Causes A Patch Of Skin On The Thigh With Numbness?

Hello, there is an area on my mid thigh, about 8 inches long, on the outside of my leg. The center couple of inches is numb, around that it is partially numb. Nothing is visible, my clothes irritate that area, it is an annoying pain. It has gotten worse over the last year.
