What Causes A Period On Discontinuing Microgynon?

I have been on microgynon for over a year, on and of of course. I was to take the 15th pill on sunday, when I stopped and have not taken it since but to my surprise, I started what seems to be menses today. what I don't understand is why now when I was a week away from takeing the ferrus fumarate?
