What Causes A Purple Patch When Pressure Is Applied?

If a patch of purpura appears spontaneously after pressure to the area (and this has never happened before), is it a sign of medical contraindications or could it simply be a bruise/broken capillaries? I have no history of blood problems, but I do take birth control.
