What Causes A Small Painful Lump On Lower Back?

Hi, I can feel a small lump on my left side towards my back around the height of the hip bone. I noticed it before but I couldn t always feel it and thought it might just be a knot in muscles or something but now I just felt it again and it hurts...what could it be?
