What Causes A Sore, Reddish Bruise On The Calf?

I have a spot on my lower calf that started out looking like a bruise. It is now hard and sore, red around, somewhat warmer than the surrounding area. The skin is starting to break down causing a burning, stinging sensation. Is this something to worry about?
