What Causes Abdominal Bloating?

My son has type 2 diabetes and is currently experiencing bloating, swelling of lower exterminates and retaining water a lot of water weight. He is very uncomfortable and it is hard for him to get around. Is there anything he can do until he gets in touch with his doctor in the morning?
