What Causes Abdominal Cramping After Having Sex During Ovulation?

Hi, me and my girlfriend have been trying to have a baby and yesterday we had sex because she believed she was ovulating. Afterwards we agreed that it felt different from any time before. She said it hurt. Then last night she started having cramps on one side of her abdomen and she is still having them tonight. What could this be or cause this?
