What Causes Abnormal Behaviour In A Child?

OUr 8 yr old son has been making animal postures and sounds at school, making various noises, being disruptive in his classroom. His teacher noticed a marked change in his behaviour over the past week. She thought he was on meds due to his bizarre behaviours. What causes this type of behaviour and what can we do to help?
