What Causes Abnormal Menstrual Discharge And Abdominal Cramps?

I take birth control pills regularly. I had my period two weeks ago and just finished my first week of my pills. Yesterday I started spotting and today it is now a very heavy think bleeding that has clots. I have cramping too. The color is very dark brown. What doea this mean?
