What Causes Abnormally Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

Hi I just got my period for this month and it is extremely heavier then normal and really dark red and kind of watery. it literally poured out when i stepped out of the shower when usually i can walk out go grab a towel or whatever and nothing will come out. it never really been this dark red colour before. I am already anemic.
