What Causes Agitation And Abusive Behavior After Taking Ativan?

My mother was given ativan in the hospital abount two days ago. She has vascular dementia and she became very agitated ,cursing flailing her arms and legs etc ... She has finally stopped after 24 hours of this. She has been sleeping, but when awake, she just babbles and makes no sense. What could have happened?
