What Causes An Itchy Rash Along The Spine?

What causes an itchy rash along the spine ? It started out small, just in the lower middle back A YEAR AGO during a heat spell. It has spread along my spine in a years time and onto my buttocks. Sweat increases the itching. My back is becoming more sore and stiff as this condition worsens.
