What Causes Back Pain And Swollen Stomach When Having Kidney Infection?

My neice is 22 she is gaining weight fast and she had kidney infections a lot as a child. Now she has a swollen stomach as if she is pregnant....... she has a lot of back pain in the area of the kidneys and urination is difficult could she have kidney disease??
