What Causes Black Toe Nails?

Hi Doctor my name is Josh and ever since i can remember all of my ten toe nails have been a black colour even when i cut them they seem to grow back a black colour i do not have any pains in them and they do not cause discomfort apart that i cannot leave my bedroom without a pair of socks on. Any ideas what this maybe????
