What Causes Blackening Of Finger Nail?

hi, my mom has developed some infection in the middle finger ( nail) of right hand, symptoms are - nail is blackened,redness at the base of the nail and burning sensation at the base of nail in very small area. Doctor prescribed zoxan for 15 days twice daily and nuforce for one month thrice weekly. wondering what is causing it?
