What Causes Bleeding After Periods?

I am 39 years old and have been on my period for about 2 1/2 weeks now. I had my regular one, no problem and then a week later I started bleeding heavier than I every have. It has lightened up some but it has been doing this for the past 5 days. I am not on birth control. Is this normal for my age?
