What Causes Bleeding After Taking An Emergency Contraceptive Pill?

Four days ago I took an emergency contraceptive pill. I now have started bleeding about two weeks before I was supposed to get my period. I have just recently been prescribed birth control but haven't started it yet. My doctor told me to start it the Sunday after I start my next period. Should I consider this bleeding to be my next period and therefore start taking my birth control tomorrow?
