What Causes Bleeding From Belly Button?

My husband is bleeding from his belly button and it seems to have a small hole all the way on the inside of the belly button. There is no foul odor or any other kind of drainage and it does not look red or infected. He has not had any trauma and no surgeries of any kind. What could be causing this ??
