What Causes Bleeding From Nipples During Breastfeeding?

I was wondering if it was normal to bleed from my nipple while breastfeeding my 6 mo old? I don't see any superficial cuts on my nipple. I noticed the blood coming from my baby's mouth while I was feeding him. My breast is very tender now. Could I have mastitis? Is bleeding possible with mastitis?
