What Causes Bleeding From Penis With Clots?

my husband is bleeding from his penis and there is clots, I had to help him pass over a 1/2 cup of large clots we went to the hospital and the put a tube up his penis to flush it ou and then put ca cathature up his penus and send him home to get an Ulta sound done which we did the doctor said his blatter seems to look OK to do the Ultra sound they clamped the tube on his cathater to get a good reading on the kidneys. He is 61 years old, thay are checking him on the 27th of June for enlarged prostrate. He dose have Diabets, High colesteral, hight blood pressure. what would make him bleed like this he is still getting dark blood in the cathater bag I have emptied it twice in the last 8 hours is that normal. My husbands says putting the cathater up his penis has cause it to continue bleeding ?
