What Causes Bleeding When On Birth Control Pills?

HI, I started my menstrual cycle and I started my BC pills yesterday. My gyno told me to call her if i do experience bleeding and she would give me instructions on how to double up to stop the bleeding but her office is closed now, therefore I was looking on how to double up.
