What Causes Blood In Urine?

I had a lab test done and results showed blood in my urine. This was done at a time when my cycle should not have been a factor. What is the most likely reason for this? I'm 46. I have read that one possibility is cancer. If that's true, are there other symptoms that would likely also exist?
