What Causes Blood Under The Toenail?

What causes blood under the toe nail? Can this be related to the toe hitting the end of the shoe? Other toe has no problems. Sometimes the nail will crack half way within the toe nail and seems to be released from the skin regularly. Thank you, Sherry YYYY@YYYY
