What Causes Breath Holding Spells?

My husband was in the ER for an ac separation, sat up in the bed and passed out, eyes open, not breathing for about a minute. The doctor said that happens sometimes and he was fine. What is that called? They said the name of it but I was still freaked out and I don t remember.
