What Causes Broken Blood Vessels On Fingers?

The blood vessel in my fingers break for no reason. Usually the discolorations only lasts for 3-4 days then dissipates. I recently had a blood vessel break in my index finger on my right hand and there are times when it would go so numb that it started turning an ash gray color. I thought it was getting better a day ago but I started experiencing numbness again. Running it under warm to hot water seems to help the circulation. What is going on and how can I help the situation?
