What Causes Brown Blotchy Rash On Back After Having Neck Surgery?

My husband has a brown blothchy rash on his back. He developed it after a neck surgery. It does not itch and it is flat and irregularly shaped. He is 58 years old, 178lbs, 5'5. He had surgery for 2 hurniated discs in his neck after being injured at work. Otherwise healthy.
