What Causes Brown Color Spotting During Menstruation?

i am not sure if i am on my period or not because everytime i go down there to wipe there is no blood what so ever but if i stick some toliet paper down in the whole there does appear to be a little bit of brown stuff and this has been happening for 2 days but it has gotten lighter as the days progressed
