What Causes Brown Discharge In Periods?

i was waiting for my next period to begin the pill for the first time. When i got my period i started the pill but instead of red blood like isial it seems to be a black/brown colour and is lighter than usual also. Its also lasting longer than normal- usually my period lasts about 4 days, im now on my 6th day. Is there something wrong?
