What Causes Brown Nasal Discharge?

I then began blowing my nose and found the color of discharge to be dark brown and very dark green so I cleansed my nose with a saline solution and a piece of matter came out that was about an inch long and had the look and consistency of silly putty.. this is not a joke.
the burning subsided as did the green/brown discharge.
